Exercise Midnight Sun - Greenland 2008

Base Camp News

23 August 2008

The second phase is now well under way and it seems strange to think that most of us will be back in UK in under a week.  The exercise is most definitely proving to be a game of two halves, with the weather since phase one left taking a definite autumnal turn.  All of the advance base camps have encountered some white and fluffy stuff and the views are now looking very similar to those we experienced in Skye at Easter.  Temperatures at night are approaching zero centigrade, proving that “light is right” doesn’t apply in all circumstances…….

The kayakers are battling against some high winds and waves but adventuring their way around the fjord whilst the testing conditions are not preventing some very impressive performances by the mountaineers and the bagging of a number of new peaks, several of which were previously unclimbed.

Doc MattMeanwhile the phase 2 base camp team of John HW, Doc Matt and John G  have been whiling away the long hours of bad weather with knot tying sessions, playing high stakes card games and practising a range of new medical procedures.  Fortunately Anders and David returned today after a 48 hour absence with news and Danish pastries from the outside world, as well as the members of the BT party who have deployed to collapse the communications system.

News from the teams will continue to be posted as and when the weather and communications system allow.

Stay tuned.
